BBC Studioworks upgrades with LSC Control Systems

(UK) LSC Control Systems’ cutting-edge GEN VI dimming technology was selected by BBC Studioworks when it undertook the technical upgrade of Studio D at BBC Elstree Centre in Borehamwood, just north of London. Designed and built by UK specialist company Distro Design, the studio’s dimming solution featured GEN VI modules, chosen for the increased flexibility they bring to users, as part of an advanced system to power the six dimmer racks on the studio’s gantry.

A long-standing customer of Distro Design, BBC Studioworks selected their most advanced dimming system for the installation. Distro Design created the solution around LSC’s GEN VI system, featuring a permanent 400A Powerlock output panel with variable and switchable RCD and rotary 400A MCCB. The system features 4 x 24 ways of LSC Control Systems’ GEN VI 5kW with 7-pin, 3-phase and 32A/single-phase sockets, and 2 x 48 ways of the GEN VI 2.5kW with Socapex outputs.

Another LSC GEN VI dimmer was supplied for the studio’s floor package. This uses 1 x 48 way module of GEN VI 2.5kW with Socapex outputs, with fully patchable bay on the top, along with 12 extra 16A/single-phase sockets for local power. All the dimmers were built to BBC Studioworks’ exact specification by Distro Design, using high quality components.

As well as its dimming function, GEN VI - billed as “a new era in power and dimming control” -provides greater user-flexibility and can also be used as a full-featured power distributor. Each channel can be configured separately as a (real) relay, for example to safely supply moving lights and LED lighting fixtures with power.

GEN VI includes combined RCBOs – using both residual current circuit breakers and two-pole circuit breakers - to protect its 12 channels. In the event of a fault current, only the affected channel will shut down, rather than the entire dimmer pack, offering the user significantly more peace of mind during the production. The GEN VI’s Pulse Transformer Fired Dimming (PTFD) feature allows even the smallest loads to be dimmed. Other features include its thermally controlled, whisper-quiet fans and its intuitive fingertip control via the 3.2” colour LCD touchscreen or via remote control through LSC’s Houston software.

GEN VI also offers a choice of circuit output capacity, number of circuits per unit, output connector styles and 3-phase or single-phase operation. The unit can be 19” rack-mounted for portable use or wall-mounted for permanent installations - a versatile solution for any situation.
